The Borough of Woodstown is located in the north central area of Salem County bordered entirely by Pilesgrove Twp. making it one of 21 pairs of “doughnut towns” in the state. It has a total area of 1.62 square miles with less than .5% being water.
A quintessential, highly walkable borough, Woodstown perfectly captures historic charm within its compact 1.6-square-mile footprint. This vibrant hub serves a close-knit population of just over 3,000 residents, remaining remarkably stable over the past few census cycles. Today, it seamlessly blends its impeccably preserved 18th-century Quaker roots with a bustling, community-driven main street.
It is during the 1720’s that a Quaker named Jackanias Wood (son of John Wood of Woodbury) is generally credited with founding the town. The settlement grew slowly and in two parts, the Millbrooke group in the south and Pilesgrove to the north. Both expanded gradually until they overlapped and formed one community. Woodstown of the 1830’s could claim sixty houses, seven streets, and three hundred inhabitants. In 1882, the townsmen voted to incorporate the community as a borough.
Woodstown grew into a prosperous hub, leaving behind a stunning architectural legacy. Its streets are lined with immaculately preserved Victorian and Colonial homes that offer a daily reminder of the borough’s historic elegance.
The borough’s vibrant downtown main street bustles with independent local shops, cozy eateries, and constant community engagement. This lively spirit peaks during the town’s famous seasonal fall festivals, drawing visitors and neighbors together to celebrate their shared local pride.
