Mannington Township, a deeply rooted agricultural community spanning 37.9 square miles, is located in the central part of Salem County. The township has sweeping wetlands and waterways which make up over 10.6% of the breathtaking landscape. Some of the communities, place names, and localities that are within the township are Acton, Marshalltown, Pointers, Portertown, Slapes Corner, and Welchville.

Previously known as East Fenwick Township, Mannington Township was first mentioned on May 12, 1701. The township was incorporated by New Jersey Legislature’s Township Act of 1798 on February 21, 1798, as one of New Jersey’s original group of 104 townships. The township’s name derives from the Lenape deity, spelled as Maneto or Manito.

This tranquil township has fiercely preserved its wide-open rural character, seeing a 18.3% population decrease over the last census decade to bring its tight-knit community to just under 1,500 residents. Today, it remains a serene expanse of preserved farmland, tidal creeks, and living history.

Manningtonโ€™s colonial legacy is proudly displayed through its historic brick homes many of which are stunning architectural relics from the 18th century. These enduring structures provide a tangible link to the township’s early days as a vital agricultural settlement in pre-Revolutionary New Jersey.

Life here revolves around the vast expanses of the Mannington Meadows, a sprawling wetland ecosystem critical for migratory birds and local agriculture. This dedication to preservation ensures that farming and nature remain the undeniable heartbeats of the community.
