Woodstown football milestone noted, plus day’s scores, highlights

WOODSTOWN – While everyone involved in Friday night’s Schalick-Woodstown football game was – rightfully so – focused on recognizing the 25th anniversary of the attacks of 9/11, another more celebratory milestone slipped under the radar.

The game was No. 1,000 in the storied history of Woodstown football, according to a recently published list of all-time New Jersey high school football records. The Wolverines played their first game in 1911.

“I didn’t know all that, but it’s very cool to be a part of,” Wolverines head coach Frank Trautz said. “Woodstown football has a tremendous history and so many great people have come through it that I’m honored just to be a small part of it.”

“It’s wild,” said Woodstown athletics director Joe Ursino, himself caught off-guard by the milestone. “I was here for when the school turned 100 years old. It’s just another feather in the cap or attribute towards the tradition that we have. A thousand football games is pretty neat.”

Penns Grove, which started football a year after Woodstown, has played the most games among the county schools and has the most wins. Salem, the longest running program in the county, dating back to 1904, is second in wins with 537.

All told, the five current Salem County football-playing schools have amassed 2,074 wins and 1,937 losses.

Woodstown is closing in on two other milestones on either side of the emotional spectrum. They are nine wins away from 500 all-time and three losses shy of the same number.

“We’ll let the Phillies and the pro sports worry about that,” Ursino said of the losses milestone. “It’s a lot of opportunities we’ve had for kids to grow and learn the game and develop as adults. We focus more on that than we do the Ls, and we celebrate the Ws, but they all have the same goal in the end.”

BOYS SOCCER
Penns Grove 3, Salem Tech 2: Juan Ortiz’ second goal of the game, four minutes into overtime, was the game-winner. Ortiz has scored a career-high nine of the Red Devils’ 13 goals this season. Avery Reed and Josh Woroniak scored for the Chargers.
Cumberland 4, Schalick 2: Fernando Santiago scored three goals as the Colts beat Schalick for the first time since 2014. Josh Stecher and Marco Spinnato scored for the Cougars.
Woodstown 8, Gloucester Catholic 0: The Wolverines had their scoring shoes on, Jake Lewis, Nick DiTeodoro and Tyler Robertson all scored twice and DiTeodoro notched three assists. It was the most they’d scored in a game since putting nine on the Rams in 2023. The Wolverines had scored seven goals in their first four games.
Glassboro 2, Pennsville 1: Lucas Kudless scores both Glassboro goals, finishing a long cross on the touchline for the game-winner. Brett Land scored for the Eagles. 

GIRLS SOCCER
Cumberland 13, Salem 1: Ellie Bodine scored seven goals, the most in a single game in the state this season. Hoboken’s Wren Napolitani had six in a game last week. Lyric Hayes scored Salem’s goal in the second half.
Woodstown 2, Gloucester Catholic 0: Bella Lucas and Genevieve Flynn scored the goals as the Wolverines won their third in a row. All three wins have been by shutout. Mazie Mazzoni and Co. haven’t allowed a goal in their last seven halves.

FIELD HOCKEY
Schalick 12, Pennsville 0: Lucy Virga scored three goals, Addi Shimp and Lily Terrigno each scored twice and the Cougars scored the most goals in any game under head coach Heather Cheesman. It’s the most goals the Cougars have scored in any game since putting 13 on Clayton in 2010. 
Salem Tech 2, Overbrook 1: Abigail Beals’ goal in the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winner for the Chargers. Hayden Crispin scored their first goal. Caroline Tighe made six saves in the goal and Jessilyn Chambers came up with a big defensive save to keep the Rams out of the net.
