Final 1.7-mile stretch of CR 540 between Alloway and Quinton set for completion by Oct. 1 as part of a 16-mile countywide paving push
QUINTON — Road work and detours begin Tuesday along Telegraph Road (Salem County Route 540), marking the final phase of a major paving project spanning Alloway and Quinton townships. Detour signs are already in place as crews prepare to work on the final 1.7-mile stretch running from the Alloway-Quinton line to Pecks Corner Road. (Route 540 is a 43-mile county highway in southern New Jersey that runs from Carneys Point Township in Salem County to Buena Vista Township in Atlantic County)
“The next road project will be the final 1.7 miles of Telegraph Road (CR #540), from the Alloway-Quinton line to Pecks Corner Road,” said Salem County Commissioner Paul Collier. “Detour signs are already in place and work is expected to begin shortly.”
Collier noted that construction should move quickly, with the contractor targeting completion by Oct. 1. Commuters should plan for delays and follow posted detour routes.
Funding and Broader County Impact
The project is financed through the Federal Highway Trust Fund and serves as part of a larger 2023 County Aid Project spanning nearly 16 miles across Salem County. Following a pre-construction meeting last month, the contract is officially in the contractor’s hands, with the county awaiting a finalized schedule for the remaining roadwork.

Weather permitting, construction will also expand to several additional routes across the county this fall:
- Elmer Richwood Road (CR 609): Upper Pittsgrove Township (from North Main Street/CR 648 to the Gloucester County line)
- Lawrence Corner Road (CR 621): Pittsgrove Township (from Willow Grove Road/CR 639 to Porchtown Road/CR 613)
- Upper Neck Road (CR 690): Pittsgrove Township (from Centerton Road/CR 553 to Willow Grove Road/CR 639)
- Chestnut Street (CR 625): Salem City (from NJ Route 49 to Grieves Parkway)
- Monroeville Road (CR 604): Upper Pittsgrove Township (from NJ Route 77 to Elmer-Richwood Road/CR 609)
- Jericho Road (CR 626): Quinton Township (from NJ Route 49 to just north of Harmersville Pecks Corner Road)
