Charles Richard Bunting, 90, of Pennsville, New Jersey, passed away on May 28th, peacefully at home surrounded by family love and care.

Charles was born on January 21, 1936, to Jessie (née Scullion) and Charles Bunting. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, brother-in-law, uncle, friend, and fisherman.

Charles, lovingly known as Carl, Charlie, Uncle Carl, Uncle Charlie (the epic cousins battle which resulted in "UC"), Uncle Fish, and "Fish," will be remembered for his humor, quick wit, and deep family connections.

His love of Christ was the foundation of his faith.

Born and raised in Kearny, New Jersey, Carl carried the deep roots of his hometown throughout his life. His family homestead at 288 became more than an address—it stood as a lasting symbol of cherished memories, family fun, love, and generations of "shenanigans." "That was a 288" continues to be a phrase often spoken among the family.

Carl was a proud graduate of St. Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark and attended St. Peter's College, where he participated in Naval ROTC, reflecting his discipline, pride, and sense of service.

After college, Carl worked at Bell Telephone, where he remained for 31 years, climbing telephone poles throughout the state. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Dorothy "Dot" Mahoney.

Charlie was married for 66 glorious years to his beloved wife Dot, whom he lovingly referred to as his "Princess" and "Little Dot." They resided in Pennsville throughout their entire marriage, held hands wherever they went, and built a life rooted in love, faith, and family. Dot embraced Charlies love of fishing and the outdoors, sharing in the simple joys and adventures that meant so much to him. Charlie was warmly welcomed into "Mahoneyville" and embraced Pennsville as home. Passing just four months apart, their devotion to each other knew no bounds.

They also shared a deep love and devotion for their families and beloved siblings. They cherished their combined 27 nieces and nephews deeply, always remembering birthdays and celebrating milestones. Their love remains a lasting gift for which the family will be forever grateful.

Charlie was a builder at heart and could repair nearly anything he put his mind to. He was known for his strong work ethic, strength, and perseverance, often helping family, friends, and neighbors without hesitation.

Carl was a man of the outdoors. Fishing, crabbing, clamming, hunting, and time spent in nature brought him great joy and peace. Fly fishing during trout season held special meaning, especially the cherished time spent with his father, whom he lovingly referred to as "Amos, the original fisherman."

Brigantine, his parents' home, was a large part of Carl's life, which eventually became Carl and Dot's home, and was deeply loved. He spent many meaningful days there. His happy place was the beloved dock, where fishing and crabbing were abundant. He will be remembered for cooking his infamous fried flounder and crab recipes on his trusty Coleman stove, adding to countless joyful gatherings.

Charlie was proud of his Boston Whaler, April Love, and spent many happy days running her through the bay on fishing and boating adventures too numerous to count. These moments remain part of his incredible legacy—The Legend.

Whether casting a line, running the bay, tending crab traps, sharing a meal, or telling countless jokes and stories, Charles lived closely connected to the rhythms of the natural world.

Always love greatly missed, we love you UC.

Carl is survived by his loving and devoted older sister and friend, Alice Giffin; sisters-in-law Angie Mahoney and Kathy Mahoney; and his adoring nieces and nephews, 57 great-nieces and nephews, and 45 great-great-nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Dorothy Mahoney Bunting; his parents Charles and Jessie Bunting; his younger sister Elizabeth Barclay; brothers-in-law Jack Giffin and James Barclay, Frank Mahoney, Jim Mahoney, and Ed Mahoney; sisters-in-law Marie Wyshinski and Elizabeth Dolbow; and nieces and nephews Bobby Barclay, Karen Giffin, David Barclay, Charles Barclay, and his devoted niece Kathleen Starcevich (Bear).

Sophie Melnick Stump, 95, passed away peacefully at her home in Pennsville, New Jersey, on May 28, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Born on June 12, 1930, in Carneys Point, New Jersey, Sophie lived a remarkable life marked by love, dedication, and resilience.

Sophie was the youngest of eight children born to Harry and Julia Klem Melnick. Sophie grew up in Penns Grove, New Jersey and attended elementary schools in Deepwater and Penns Grove NJ. She achieved a milestone that brought her great pride—becoming the only member of her family to graduate high school. Sophie graduated from Penns Grove Regional High School (Re-Hi) in 1948 and often fondly recalled being selected by Miss Wainwright, the principal of Lafayette School in Carneys Point, to play the Statue of Liberty in an eighth-grade play alongside Richard Combs as Uncle Sam.

Following high school, Sophie pursued further education at Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts. During her time there, she had the unique opportunity to sing with Billy Graham in the college's auditorium. However, due to limited financial resources, she returned home after one year and began working to support herself and her daughter. Over the years, Sophie held various jobs that showcased her strong work ethic and determination. She worked at the diner on Virginia Avenue in Penns Grove, Riverview Beach Park in Pennsville, Anchor Hocking glass manufacturing facility in Salem, and A&P markets in Penns Grove and Swedesboro for 13 years. In 1995, she retired from Acme Markets in Woodstown after an impressive 31 years of dedicated service.

Sophie was a devoted mother to her only child, Deborah Griscom. She cherished her role as a grandmother to Dr. Danielle Diener (John Diener) and Guy E. Griscom and was overjoyed to become a great-grandmother to Jackson Diener. Her family remembers her as the most amazing, soft-spoken, and loving person who would do anything for those she cared about. Sophie deeply loved not only her family but also Deborah’s friends and thought the world of her grandchildren's friends.

A woman of faith and intellect, Sophie was a dedicated member of St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish (formerly Corpus Christi Church). In her younger years, she read the entire Bible from cover to cover—a testament to her curiosity and devotion. She enjoyed reading, solving word finders, and watching or listening to Lawrence Welk. One of her greatest joys was attending all of her grandchildren's activities; she was immensely proud of their accomplishments.

Sophie is preceded in death by her parents Harry and Julia Klem Melnick; brothers William (May), Michael (Madeline), George (Audrey); sisters Mary (Frank), Anna (Ramon), Dorothy (Kenneth), and her fraternal twin sister Julia (Will and Al). She will be deeply missed by her daughter Deborah Griscom and son-in-law Guy M. Griscom; grandchildren Dr. Danielle Diener (John Diener) and Guy E. Griscom; great-grandson Jackson Diener; and many dear friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sophie’s memory to St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish at 369 Georgetown Road, Carneys Point NJ 08069 or Angelic Hospice at 302 Hooper Avenue, Toms River NJ 08753.

Sophie’s legacy is one of love, perseverance, and unwavering devotion to her family and faith. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.

It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Steven Paul Melnick, Sr., age 77, of Pennsville, NJ. He passed away peacefully at home on May 23, 2026, with his loving wife and children by his side.

Steve was born on April 3, 1949, in Salem, NJ to Chrissie Marie (Jess) Melnick. He was raised by his mother and grandfather, George A. Jess Sr. "Pop Jess," on his grandfather's farm in Carney's Point, NJ. This special place is where his love of family and gardening began. This is where his roots dug deep and his mentality of work hard, love hard, all made sense.

Steve graduated from Penns Grove High School in Penns Grove, NJ, in 1968.

He was first employed by Anchor Hocking, where he met Emma, the love of his life. He was later employed by BF GOODRICH/Mexichem and worked as a maintenance mechanic for 45 years, until his retirement in 2015.

Steve and Emma were wed on August 22, 1970, at Hudson United Methodist Church in Pedricktown, NJ. The loving couple recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary, in August 2025.

Steve really enjoyed gardening and grew the best NJ tomatoes. In his retirement, he also enjoyed woodworking and was a master wood turner of bowls, vases, and ornaments. His other hobbies included fishing, NASCAR, fixing things, mowing and caring for his beautiful yard and flowers.

He was a cat and dog whisperer and loved his current dog, Milo, and his cat, Binx. In his life he cared for King, Tiny, Sanya, Jason, Buffy, Buttercup, Buddy, Mama Kitty, and his granddogs JackPoo and Bubba. All were special to him.

Steve is survived by his wife, Emma Elizabeth Garrison Melnick, son Steven Paul Melnick Jr.(Candace Burlingame), daughter Shirley Marie Melnick (Mickey Crouse), and our blood brother cousin, Joseph Robert Ford, who he loved like his own son. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Kristian D. McNiss Jr. (Brittany Williams-McNiss), Emma Marie McNiss, Mirissa Michele Melnick, and great-granddaughter, Virginia Ruth McNiss.

He was predeceased by his grandfather, "Pop Jess" George Armstrong Jess Sr., his mother Chrissie Marie Jess Melnick, and his mother and father-in-law, Augusta Virginia Bagwell Garrison and Edward Tatum Garrison, Jr.

Susan "Suba" P. Humphreys, 65, of Pennsville, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026.

Born on March 4, 1961, in Salem County, she was the daughter of William Humphreys and Alice Kisling. Susan moved through life with a loud curiosity and a deeply compassionate spirit. A devoted mother, sister, and friend, she carried a lifelong commitment to learning, to justice, and to caring for all living beings.

Her life's work was both practical and profound. As a mortician, she served others in their most difficult moments with dignity and grace. As a published poet, artist, and crafter, she gave voice to her inner world, creating beauty that reflected both her sensitivity and strength. She was also a passionate advocate for human rights, guided always by a deep sense of empathy and fairness.

She found joy in wandering—through travel, through music, and through creative expression. She was endlessly curious, fiercely loyal, and capable of a rare and unconditional love. Her daughter was the center of her world, and her beloved pets held a special place in her heart.

She is survived by her daughter, Emily Eve Humphreys, and her brother, Denis Humphreys. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Deborah Humphreys.

Though her presence is no longer with us, the love she gave, the art she created, and the lives she touched remain—quietly and enduringly—woven into the world around her. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In her own words, an excerpt from "Birth #1" from her poetry book "Spiral Birth of Creation."

"Mind is no longer aware of itself,
I merge within a convolution of Light,
Set upon the spiral of Universal creation
An ever-beginning vortex within Infinity

I am
and
I am not

Here

Soul Expressions are woven in intricate tapestries,
Unique interpretations of a single, simple design
Each a masterpiece of LOVE

As the Artist's hand begins to weave,
I become aware of a tiny, golden thread……

I begin again"

Neal Edward Caldwell, lovingly known to so many simply as “Uncle Neal,” passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, at the age of 83.

Born on October 2, 1942, in Bay City, Michigan, Neal lived a life defined by service, loyalty, quiet strength, and deep devotion to his family. After graduating from high school in Bay City, he proudly served his country for 22 years in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1982 with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant (SMSGT). As a Command and Control Superintendent, Neal served throughout the world, including assignments in Germany, England, Iceland, and during the Vietnam War era. His distinguished military career included the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and Presidential Unit Citation. Neal was deeply proud of his military service and of being a Vietnam veteran.
Following his military retirement, Neal and his beloved wife Janet made their home in Pennsville, New Jersey, where they spent more than four decades building a life centered around family, faith, and community. Neal continued his professional career as a Human Resources Specialist with Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G).

Neal was deeply proud of many things in life, but nothing meant more to him than being a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He and Janet built a loving life together after marrying in 1964, sharing nearly 62 years of devotion, humor, and partnership. Their relationship was filled with love, laughter, and the playful nickname Neal affectionately used for her for years — “Big Mean Jan.”

A lifelong musician and devoted church organist, Neal spent countless hours at the organ, where music brought him peace, comfort, and joy. For many years, including most recently at Trinity Global Methodist Church in Pennsville, Neal arrived early, before services, simply to play hymns as people entered the sanctuary, hoping to help them feel welcome and at peace before worship even began. At home, the sound of hymns flowing from his organ was a familiar part of daily life and often helped calm his mind during difficult times.
Neal was also a proud 50-year Mason and a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. His faith, principles, and commitment to others guided the way he lived his life. Friends and family knew him as kind, intelligent, loyal, generous, and dependable. He often reminded those around him that “two heads are always better than one,” and was equally well known for asking, usually with a smile, “How much was that?” no matter what someone had just purchased.

He loved coin collecting, talking with his sons, his cherished 1952 Chevy, and above all, the laughter of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Though Neal was not always one to openly say the words “I love you,” his family never questioned how deeply he cared. He showed it every day through his actions, his consistency, his sacrifice, and his unwavering presence.

Neal was preceded in death by his parents, Robert John Caldwell and Elizabeth Mae Hoppes Caldwell, along with his seven siblings, many of whose children lovingly viewed him as a second father throughout their lives.

He is survived by his loving wife, Janet Caldwell; his sons, Mark Caldwell and his wife Michele, and Richard Caldwell and his wife Patricia; his grandsons, Michael Caldwell and his wife Kathryn, Neal Caldwell, and Eric Caldwell; his granddaughters, Ashley and her husband Marc, Brooke and her husband Patrick, and Paige; and eight great-grandchildren who brought him tremendous joy.
