Donald Lee Sheffield

July 22, 1933 - August 22, 2026

A service will be held on Friday, August 28, 2026 at Friendship United Methodist Church (149 Friendship Rd, Monroeville NJ). Friends may call between the hours of 9-11am, service at 11am.  The burial will be private at Canton Baptist Church In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Quinton Fire Company (PO Box 8, Quinton NJ 08072), in Don’s memory.

Donald Lee Sheffield, 93, of Quinton NJ, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, August 22, 2026.  Heaven welcomed him home, where he now rests in the loving arms of his Savior, Jesus.

Born on July 22, 1933 in Bridgeton NJ, Don was the beloved son of Charles Elwood Sheffield and Mary “Helen” (Cobb) Sheffield. Don lived a life defined by quiet strength, boundless generosity, and a deep love for the people around him.  Throughout his life, Don was the kind of man who never knew a stranger, only future friends.  Whether tending his garden or sitting quietly on the back porch, he had a unique way of making everyone feel valued and deeply loved.  He lived with quiet integrity, always putting his family first, and treating every person he met with genuine respect.  His steady presence, gentle wisdom, and unwavering support spoke volumes.

Don dedicated his life to family, career, and his community. He was a graduate of the Salem High School Class of 1952.  An extremely hardworking man from his teenage years onward and he took great pride in his work at Anchor Glass, where he was a Floor Supervisor for 35 years. He also worked as the delivery man at Williams Auto Parts, until he retired at the age of 82.   Outside of work, Don proudly served as a volunteer for the Quinton Fire Company for 56 years, as well as Meals On Wheels.  He attended Friendship United Methodist Church, where he worshiped and served faithfully. He had a green thumb and a heart for growing things, tending his garden of strawberries and tomatoes, which he grew in abundance and shared his harvest with his friends and family.  He loved being outdoors.  He nurtured his garden with the same patience, love, and care he poured into raising his family.

Above all, Don took immense pride in a hard day’s work, but his true life’s work was his family.  He was a devoted husband, a loving daddy, a proud grandfather, and a playful great-grandfather – a faithful son of God who taught us to walk in His ways.  He treasured his family and cherished every moment spent with those closest to him. Some of the happiest memories were sharing his cherished oyster dinners, watching his face light up as he proudly cheered on his children and grandchildren at SHS sporting events—especially baseball, a tradition shared by all of his children and grandsons—and gathering during the holidays, when the whole family would come together under one roof to share meals, stories, laughter, and the simple gift of being together.  He showed us what goodness looks like, not through big speeches, but through a lifetime of kindness, patience, and a helping hand.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 33 years: Bonny Flitcraft Sheffield. He is survived by his three children: Steven Donald Sheffield (Kathleen), Karen Lee Sheffield Underwood (Kevin), and Diane Lynn Sheffield Bowman Elwell (Jeffrey). He will also be lovingly remembered by his two stepchildren: Rick Krassow (Susan) and Kim Krassow Hiller (Neil).  His legacy of love continues through his eleven grandchildren: Shannon Sheffield, Sean Sheffield (Julia), Brittany Maull (Douglas), Ryan Underwood (Marissa), Parker Bowman (Ashley), Seciley Sheffield, Noah Underwood (Kelsey), Emily Bowman (Joshua), Jacob Hiller (Hannah), Eric Krassow (Maya), and Katie Hiller Hamilton (Evan).  He was also a proud great-grandfather to three great-grandchildren: Maggie Mae Maull, Gracie Lee Underwood, and Beau Donald Sheffield, who brought him immeasurable joy.  He will also continue to be cherished by his two sisters: Joan Bell (Donald) and Margaret Dare, as well as his in-laws: Betsy Flitcraft, Bill Flitcraft (Dawn), and Carlene Mowbray (Bob). He will be lovingly remembered by countless other family members and friends, all of whom were fortunate enough to share in his life, and experience the warmth, kindness, and love he so freely gave.  He was, quite simply, the best man – his kindness and integrity leaves behind a legacy of deep love and devotion in his family, all of whom carry forward his gentle spirit.

He was preceded in death by his wife of just shy of 35 years: Viola Mae Halter Sheffield, their son: Brian Charles Sheffield, his in-laws: George and Viola Halter and Carl and Alberta Flitcraft, his son-in-law: George Bowman III, his brother-in-law: Jere Dare, his two sisters-in-law: Georgiana Halter Carll (Jim) and Joan Halter Davis (Jack), his stepsister: Carolyn Snedeker, and his stepbrother: Charles Elwood Sheffield Jr (Patty).

Those who knew Don will remember him for his warm smile, his generous spirit, and his willingness to listen and talk for as long as anyone cared to sit with him on his back porch.   Though Don is no longer with us, his love, laughter, and memory will remain in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that his love remains the foundation of our lives.  Don, Daddy, Grandpop will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.  His wisdom and kindness will stay with us forever.
