Elsinboro is located on the midwestern border of Salem County surrounded by the Delaware River, and has a total area of 13.34 square miles. The township was incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798, as one of New Jersey’s 104 original group of townships. Other communities, localities, and place names within the township include Elsinboro Neck, Elsinboro Point, Hagerville, Mill Creek Cove, Moores Corner, Oakwood Beach and Sinnickson Landing
Tucked away along the sweeping bends of the Delaware River, Elsinboro is a serene coastal township defined by its rich marshlands and unobstructed water views. Its local roots reach all the way back to the 17th century with the New Sweden colony’s Fort Elfsborg—an early settlement notoriously plagued by aggressive local mosquitoes.
Today, it offers a quiet, tucked-away lifestyle for those who appreciate nature and New Jersey’s early coastal history.
Elsinboro marks one of the earliest European footprints in the region, once housing the 1643 Swedish fortification known as Fort Elfsborg. While the fort eventually succumbed to the elements, the township’s Swedish and Finnish heritage remains a point of deep local pride.
The Elsinboro Point area offers some of the most striking, unobstructed views of the Delaware River in the county. Life here is defined by the changing tides, gentle breezes, and the quiet beauty of the surrounding protected marshlands.
