Julia Dorsey Merrylees

Julia L. “Julie” (Merrylees) Dorsey, 67, of Elsinboro, New Jersey, peacefully passed away on July 14, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on August 28, 1958, in Warren, Pennsylvania, Julie lived a life centered on love, family, service, and her lifelong passion for dance. She was the beloved daughter of the late William and Jennie Merrylees. Dance was Julie’s calling. In 1982, she fulfilled her dream by opening South Jersey Dance Academy, where she inspired and mentored young dancers for 13 years. Even after closing the studio, she continued sharing her talent at a former student’s studio until just a few years ago. Through her patience, encouragement, and dedication, Julie helped shape not only skilled dancers but confident young people, many of whom went on to teach and inspire others. Alongside her dance career, Julie dedicated 25 years to the Salem County Treasurer’s Office before retiring. She later worked for Avenues as a caregiver, lovingly supporting her brother, John—reflecting the compassion and selflessness that defined her life. Julie was known for her remarkable organizational skills, strong will, generous heart, and unwavering devotion to her family. She brought people together, never forgot a birthday or special occasion, and was often the glue that kept loved ones connected. Whether planning family vacations, cheering on those she loved, or simply being there when someone needed her, Julie made everyone feel valued. Her legacy of kindness, strength, and unconditional love lives on in the many lives she touched. Julie is survived by her loving husband, Robert Dorsey Sr. Julie and Bob shared 36 years of love and partnership, a lifelong commitment that remained strong through every chapter of their lives. Julie leaves behind her son, Jason Weber, and his fiancée, Christine Craig; her stepchildren, Robert Dorsey Jr. (Kelly), Jennifer Aldana (Jose), and Brett Dorsey (Leslie). She is lovingly remembered by her twelve grandchildren and one precious great grandchild, born the day before her passing. Julie was able to see a photo of her newest great grandchild, a moment that brought her profound joy. Julie’s brothers Bill, Scott, Ralph, and John Merrylees, along with her sister, Kimberli Kelley, and sister-in-law Lorraine Pobanz, will forever hold her memory close. She is also remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, former students, and dear friends who were blessed to know her. Though Julie’s greatest accomplishments were never measured by awards or titles, they can be seen in every dancer she shaped, every family gathering she brought together, every life she encouraged, and every heart she touched. Her love, guidance, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed but forever remembered. The family finds comfort knowing her legacy will continue through the family she cherished, the students she inspired, and the countless memories she created throughout her beautiful life. In lieu of flowers, the family has established the Miss Julie’s Legacy Fund to continue her love for dance and support future generations. Donations may be made through the GoFundMe created in her honor. Services will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday July 24th at the Laughrey Funeral Home where friends may call from 4:00 to 6:00 PM prior to the service. Burial will be private.
