LOWER ALLOWAYS CREEK TWP. – Lower Alloways Creek Fire & Rescue led the response to a large barn fire off Frank Smith Road Tuesday that destroyed a barn full of hay and tractors. Fire companies from across Salem County assisted.
The fire started around 10:30 a.m., according to 6abc. By the time 6abc’s Chopper 6 was overhead around 12:40 p.m., flames had ripped through the barn and heavy smoke was visible for miles. Photos from the scene show the barn’s red metal walls twisted and collapsed, with burned tractors and charred round hay bales inside and around the structure. Crews were still on scene working hot spots in the late afternoon.
Lower Alloways Creek Fire & Rescue apparatus and supply lines covered the property. Alloway’s ladder truck was set up over the barn, and tankers, including Greenwich Tender 14, supplied water to the rural site.
Mutual aid companies were Greenwich, Hopewell, Alloway, Salem, Willow Grove, Reliance, Quinton, Pennsville, Elsinboro and Upper Deerfield. The Salem County Sheriff’s Office, Quinton Ambulance and Squad 45 (EMSS) also responded.
No injuries have been reported. It was not immediately clear whether any animals were inside. The cause is under investigation.
