Obituaries

John Lee Schaeffer, age 83 of Pilesgrove, died Friday, July 17, 2026 in his home. Born and raised in Salem, son of the late John George & Rae (Harris) Schaeffer, he was a 1961 graduate of Salem High School. He had worked at DuPont for 20 years and also owned and operated his remodeling business, Custom Home Remodeling, for 30 years before his retirement. He enjoyed antique car shows, camping in Lancaster, hunting, grilling, and working in his yard. John is survived by his son & daughter-in-law, David L. & Allison Schaeffer; his daughter, Mary Jane Schaeffer; four grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Evelyn C. “Tomi” (Kirkpatrick) Schaeffer in March of 2020; his brother, David Robert Schaeffer; and his sister, Beverly Ann Woodlin. A graveside service will be held at 10 AM on Friday, July 31st in Lawnside Cemetery, Rt. 45 & Rt. 40, Pilesgrove. Please visit htlaytonfh.com to leave a note of condolence to John’s family.
