Henry V. Engel, Jr., age 90, of Alloway, NJ passed away Monday, August 17, 2026, at his home. Born in Camden, NJ, he was the son of the late Henry V. and Martha V. (nee Verrat) Engel. Henry was a 1950 graduate of Holy Name Grammar School in Camden, a 1954 graduate of Camden Catholic High School, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in electronic physics from La Salle University in 1967. Henry was a US Army veteran, having served from 1958-1961. Henry worked as a supervisor for AT&T, retiring in 1989 after 34 years of service. After his retirement, he spent a year teaching at St. Augustine High School, where he was a scorekeeper for the boysโ€™ basketball team for eight years, before settling into working part-time for his sonโ€™s surveying business. Henry is survived by his son, Henry V. Engel, III (Karen) of Alloway; his daughters, Linda Loveland (John) of Oak Hill, FL and Colleen Fulmer (Jeff) of Alloway; his grandchildren, Jamie, Lauren, Ashley, Ryan Kathleen (Cubby), Christopher, Riley and Lucas; and eight great-grandchildren. Henry was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Judith Ann (nee Brennan), in 2009, and his sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Terrence Sack. Henry was an avid lover of all things sports. He played on the menโ€™s softball team, the Cedarbrook Moles, with his colleagues at AT&T, and was a high school basketball official for Board 34 out of Camden for 25 years. But his true love was watching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren playing whatever sport they were involved in. He rarely missed a game, and could often be found berating officials for bad calls just as enthusiastically as he cheered on his offspring. If you knew Henry, you knew that his faith in God was unwavering. He attended daily Mass, sometimes twice on Saturdays, and often led the praying of the Rosary before or after daily Mass. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 PM, Tuesday, August 25th at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 51 Broad Street, Woodstown, NJ 08098. Family and friends may visit at Woodside Funeral Home, 613 Salem Quinton Rd., Salem, NJ 08079 (Quinton Twp.) from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, Tuesday, August 25 prior to the Mass. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Contributions may be made in Henryโ€™s name to Memorial Giving, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Please include Henryโ€™s name on the check or accompanying note.
