By the Numbers: Salem City Police release September Totals
SALEM – The Salem Police Department handled 816 total incidents during September 2026 — up from 781 in August, though still below the 912 calls logged in July and the 848 recorded in June. The month’s most serious incidents included an unattended death and three reports of shots fired.
Looking at the four-month stretch from June through September, ambulance calls have remained the department’s single largest call category every month, even as the monthly count has trended downward — from 102 in June to 90 in July, 95 in August and 81 in September. Follow-up investigations and well-being-check/mental-illness-related calls have also stayed near the top of the list each month, underscoring how much of the department’s workload centers on medical, welfare and behavioral-health response rather than traditional crime.
