In 1898, the newly completed fortifications at Fort Mott were turned over from the Army Corp of Engineers, who built the fortifications, to the Coast Artillery Corp to be garrisoned. 1,200 miles away, the Spanish Colony of Cuba was making another attempt to gain independence from Spain. When the Battleship Maine exploded in Havana Harbor, Cuba, the United States declared war on Spain. With American forces being sent abroad to fight in Cuba, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico, fortifications like Fort Mott were activated to defend the coast of the United States.

This weekend, come to Fort Mott State Park to learn about the summer of 1898 as experienced at Fort Mott and abroad. Reenactors representing US and Spanish troops and sailors will be on hand to provide a glimpse into the Spanish American War. Walk through encampments of American and Puerto Rican military personnel, and discover the history and legacy of this conflict.

This family-friendly, living history event is free. The event is mostly outdoors, and is rain or shine. Come prepared for the weather and lots of walking. There is free parking available in the main parking lot.

Hours are 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday and 10 am to 2 pm on Sunday.
