PITMAN — Pennsville played its most complete game of the season Friday night and it produced a 41-0 shutout of Pitman.
The Eagles (2-1) moved the ball on the ground and in the air, and it defense was relentless.
“We did a lot of good stuff today,” Pennsville coach Mike Healy said. “It was nice being able to get the run game going a little bit, which we hadn’t been able to yet. Defensively we played very well, so I can’t complain about that. We took care of business tonight.”
It started from the get-go. Jake Layfield passed for 147 yards in a long first quarter, including a 50-yard screen pass to Chase Johnson for a touchdown on the second play of the game. Layfield also threw a screen pass to Tristan Horner for a score.
Once they established the lead, the Eagles then turned things over to the running game. Horner ran for two more touchdowns and Aiden Collazo had a 1-yard touchdown rush after getting it down there on a 70-yard run.
“My performance was simple,” Layfield said. “We ran the ball a bit today so there weren’t as many passing attempts. My backfield and line did amazing today with run blocking and giving time. The defense played amazing and (with) a lot of heart.”
The defense was impressive. They intercepted four passes, three by Jacob Kimani, one of which he brought all the way back for a score. Grady Sanders had the other pick. The Eagles have posted a shutout in each of the last four seasons.
“The defense tonight was great,” linebacker Dante Cummings said. “We were downhill and physical. We were swarming to the ball every play. The D-line was getting in the backfield and getting to the quarterback and the DBs were all over the wide receivers.
“We were hungry and we wanted to play a full four quarters as a unit. Yes, we made some mistakes, but I would choose to play with those boys every day of the week.”
