SALEM, NJ — Twenty inmates earned three college credits thanks to a partnership between the Salem County Sheriff’s Office and Salem Community College.

The inmates – 15 men and five women – completed a health and wellness course taught by SCC instructor James Menz at the Salem County Correctional Facility.

At a recent ceremony, the students were honored by Warden Raymond C. Skradzinski and Assistant Warden Anthony Wright.

“We’re very proud,” Skradzinski said. “You’ve set the benchmark,” he continued while speaking to the twenty new SCC students.

Assistant Warden Wright encouraged the inmates stating, “This could be a new beginning for many of you. You’ve got a taste of what college is all about.” Wright continued, “Take this opportunity and run with it.”

SCC Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs Ken Robell congratulated the students and stressed the importance of continuing their coursework. “Education is the key for people to be more successful in life,” he said.  “Look at this as just the beginning.”

Director of Social Rehabilitation Joyce Massey underscored Robell’s advice.  “Education is never wasted,” she said, “whether it’s for personal enrichment or for earning a degree leading to a career.”

Salem Community College and the Sherriff’s Office will continue their partnership in 2017 with a diversity course.
