Salem, NJ — The annual open enrollment period to make Medicare changes ends December 7, and for those who need help, the Salem County Office on Aging & Disabilities has certified staff who can answer questions.

The only two counselors in Salem County who are certified through the State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) are Betty Meyers and Cindy Knight in the Salem County Office on Aging and Disabilities. From October 15 through December 7, they help seniors and address groups throughout the County. They can explain the different Medicare Plans, discuss differences with Medicare Advantage, and compare various prescription drug plans.

“Even if you are satisfied with your current Medicare coverage, you may still want to contact one of our counselors to explore options that may better suit you in the upcoming year, especially if you have new prescriptions or want to lower costs,” said Freeholder Director Julie Acton.

Open enrollment is for seniors on Medicare, Medicaid, disabled on Medicaid, retirees, and anyone with health insurance.

In the first eight days of the open enrollment period, Office on Aging & Disabilities staff received more than 125 phone calls for help, including requests for appointments.

“The most frequent questions are about how to save money on medications, how to get a supplemental plan for medigap, how to compare medigap plans, and how to navigate health care options when one partner is newly retired and the other is not yet Medicare eligible,” said Freeholder Bob Vanderslice, Chair of the Health and Human Services Committee.
